Olaplex Treatment aftercare: A 7-Day Do's & Don'ts Plan

When I take the time to “do it right, ” like one client mentioned after an Olaplex conditioner and style, the aftercare is what protects that smooth, strong feel you leave with. The biggest rule is simple: wait at least 24 to 48 hours before shampooing. During that same window, skip pools, Lake Erie dips, heavy sweating, and tight hairstyles that tug. If you’re in Westlake dealing with lake-effect humidity in summer or dry winter air, those first two days make a noticeable difference in frizz and shine.
I’m writing this like I’d tell you in my chair at Sahars Beauty Bar near Crocker Park: keep it simple, protect the bonds I just worked on, and you’ll get more days of “my hair has never looked or felt better” results.
The first 24 to 48 hours after Olaplex: the rules that matter most
Olaplex Treatment is designed to help repair and strengthen the internal bonds of the hair. Think of the first 24 to 48 hours as a protection window. I want you to keep the hair calm so the finish stays smooth and you don’t rough up the cuticle right away.
Do this first: Keep your hair dry for 24 to 48 hours. No shampooing, no co-washing, and no “just a quick rinse.”
Do’s (quick and realistic)
- Keep hair down or in a loose clip. If you have curly hair, a loose pineapple is fine, but keep it gentle.
- Sleep on a smooth pillowcase if you have one. Less friction helps, especially in Westlake’s humid months.
- If you need to style, use low heat and a heat protectant. Short, controlled passes beat blasting your hair for 20 minutes.
Don’ts (these are the common slip-ups)
- Don’t hit the pool, hot tub, or Lake Erie right away. Chlorine and saltwater are rough on freshly treated hair.
- Don’t do a sweaty workout in that window. Sweat and repeated scalp rubbing can make hair feel dull faster.
- Don’t pull hair tight in a ponytail, slick bun, or tight braids. That tension can leave dents and stress the hair when it’s most vulnerable.
Days 3 to 7: keep the strength, skip the frizz triggers
By day three, you can usually get back to normal hair life, just smarter. This is the week where people notice the difference in shine and resilience, especially if you color often. I see it all the time with clients who come in for color and highlights and want that “stunning” finish to stay that way.
My simple rule for week one: wash less, condition more, and don’t over-style. If you’re a commuter or a parent juggling mornings, this is your low-maintenance win.
Heat styling in the first week
If you flat iron or curl, keep it low to medium heat and always use a protectant. One of my regulars told me her curls stayed in all night after a last-minute appointment, and that’s the goal. You get hold and shine without cooking the hair back into dryness.
Outdoor time and water exposure
If you end up around water after the first 48 hours, rinse your hair thoroughly as soon as you can and follow with conditioner. If you were in chlorine and your hair feels coated, I may recommend a clarifying step, but I don’t love random clarifying shampoos without a plan. Let me know what happened and I’ll tell you the simplest fix.
The products I’d put you on after Olaplex (and what to avoid)
You don’t need a shelf full of products. You need the right types. After an in-salon Olaplex Treatment, I like a gentle routine that keeps hydration in and friction down, especially through Westlake’s humid summers and winter dryness.
Use: sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo
This helps maintain softness and keeps color looking fresh if you’re also doing highlights, retouches, or balayage.
Use: moisturizing conditioner every wash
Conditioner is your daily insurance policy. If your ends feel thirsty, add a leave-in just to mid-lengths and ends.
Consider: a weekly bond-repair or strengthening mask at home
Once a week is plenty for most people. Overdoing protein-heavy masks can make hair feel stiff, so keep it balanced.
What to avoid this week: harsh clarifiers unless I’ve told you to use one, heavy alcohol-based styling products that leave hair crunchy, and super-hot tools “because it’s faster.” It’s never faster in the long run.
If something feels off, text me back: quick check-ins near Crocker Park
Most people feel their hair is smoother, shinier, and easier to manage after Olaplex. If you’re not feeling that, I want to know. Sometimes it’s as simple as one product swap, a heat tweak, or fixing a timing issue with that first wash.
“Owner is extremely professional, nice and goes above and beyond to make sure everything is perfect.”
one of our regulars
Here’s when I want you to reach out: your hair suddenly feels sticky or coated after water exposure, you’re shedding more than normal for you, or your scalp feels irritated after changing products. And if you’re planning color or any chemical service soon, ask me about timing. I’ll usually recommend waiting until the initial bonding window has passed, then we’ll plan your next step so you keep the strength you just paid for.
Quick reminder: If you found me searching “haircut near me” or “hair salon near me, ” you’re in the right place for hair health, not just a one-day style.
And if you’re making an evening out of Crocker Park, I’m an easy stop before dinner, plus I can help you plan a low-maintenance routine that fits real life in Westlake, Bay Village, Rocky River, North Olmsted, Fairview Park, or Olmsted Falls.
